What is an endometrial polyp?

Patient's question:

I am 24 years old, female. Recently, my menstrual flow has been heavy, and I have also experienced abdominal pain again. The doctor diagnosed it as endometrial polyps. What are endometrial polyps?

Doctor's answer:

Endometrial polyps are essentially areas of the endometrium that have been locally stimulated by various factors, leading to fibrosis. Therefore, within the uterine cavity, they protrude like fingers or small hills. They are actually the final manifestation of localized endometrial fibrosis. Some patients with endometrial polyps may have no symptoms, and they are discovered during physical examinations or MRI scans. However, some polyps can grow to be very large, extending from the uterine cavity all the way down to the cervix, or even outside the cervix. In some cases, the polyps can even extend outside the vaginal opening, which is how they are detected.
