Features: People have long expected to rely on endoscopy for disease diagnosis under direct visualization, and even more so for disease treatment. Gynecological endoscopy includes laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and colposcopy. Although colposcopy and hysteroscopy were applied earlier for the diagnosis of gynecological diseases, the application of laparoscopic diagnostic technology began in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Over these more than 30 years, gynecological endoscopic doctors in China have accumulated extensive experience in diagnosing conditions such as female infertility, pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ovarian tumors using laparoscopy. They have enriched and developed the content of gynecological diagnostics, providing gold standards for the diagnosis of certain diseases. With the accumulation of experience, the promotion of international exchanges, and advancements in technology, by the late 1980s, surgical treatments under laparoscopy and hysteroscopy in China made remarkable progress. Many classic open gynecological surgeries faced challenges from endoscopic procedures. Gynecological endoscopy is emerging as a new discipline, and advanced gynecological endoscopic techniques have gradually entered the field of gynecological diagnostics and treatment. As a practitioner of gynecological endoscopic technology, I have long harbored a wish to combine the experience learned from predecessors with my own insights to write a monograph on the application of gynecological endoscopy and compile a photographic atlas from clinical photographs for reference by clinicians or for training beginners. With the strong support of Professor Feng Zhanchong and Professor Ding Aihua in 2001, I finally completed the monograph "Practical Gynecological Endoscopy," which contains over 270 photographs but falls far short of being a comprehensive and systematic gynecological endoscopic atlas. What I am particularly grateful for is that in early 2000, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief Du Shen of People's Medical Publishing House visited the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Fudan University Affiliated Hospital to solicit topics for the monograph. I had the opportunity to suggest writing an "atlas," which was supported by People's Medical Publishing House, undoubtedly igniting my passion to complete the "atlas." After nearly three more years of accumulating endoscopic photographs and with the full support of the two deputy editors, Professor Jiang Qingchun and Professor Xu Aidi, we finally completed this "Gynecological Endoscopic Atlas" in early April 2003. The "Gynecological Endoscopic Atlas" is divided into three major sections: laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and colposcopy. Each section is presented in chapters on the history, equipment and instruments, application principles, diagnostic and surgical techniques, and diagnostic and surgical atlas. It comprises 27 chapters. The laparoscopy section was completed by me and Professor Jiang Qingchun, while the hysteroscopy and colposcopy sections were completed by Professor Xu Aidi. The entire text contains approximately 160,000 words, 203 line drawings, and 982 color photographs, all of which are endoscopic photographs taken by the author in clinical practice. Through gradual accumulation, we have finally compiled a relatively comprehensive and systematic atlas, including normal anatomical structures under endoscopy, photographs of various gynecological diseases observed under the microscope, and surgical photographs.
