The author's writing style is unique, delicate, vivid, and full of variety. Some scenes, such as the tender affection between lovers at a court banquet, are poetic; while others, like the fierce battle with bandits in a forest with a black bear, are thrilling and gripping. The young Dutchman Gerard falls deeply in love with the beautiful and kind Margaret, but is betrayed by treacherous individuals, forcing him to flee to a foreign land alone. In despair, he takes a dark path but is saved from being stabbed, after which he converts to religion and becomes an outstanding monk. One day, he meets Margaret, who has already given birth to his child, in a church and learns that their separation over the years was entirely due to the treacherous individuals. At this time, Gerard, deeply devoted to his extreme religious beliefs, is reluctant to linger on worldly love and retreats to live in a mountain cave. Later, after Margaret repeatedly pleads with him at night, holding his infant in her arms, he leaves the cave and becomes a parish priest, earning the trust of the local congregation. Unfortunately, the city where his son studies is struck by a plague, and Margaret bravely rushes to save their son but contracts the disease herself. She dies shortly after, in the arms of Gerard, who has hurried to her side. Gerard's deeply hidden love erupts into immense grief, ultimately leaving him too weak to recover.
