Born in June 1985, he served as a member of the Drafting Committee of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In April 1986, he was appointed as the Hong Kong-side head of the Political System Sub-committee of the Drafting Committee. In 1989, at the anniversary tea party celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ming Pao's establishment, he announced his appointment as Chairman of Ming Pao Holdings Limited. In December 1991, he jointly announced with Pin Hai the acquisition of Ming Pao Enterprises through Zhicheng Management Consulting Technology. In February 1992, he traveled to the United States as a visiting scholar at Oxford University. On April 18, 1993, Jiang Zemin met with Jin Yong. On April 1, he was appointed as the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ming Pao Enterprises Limited. In January 1994, Hong Kong Chinese University published the English translation of Jin Yong's wuxia novels. In March, Beijing Joint Publishing House launched the simplified-character edition of the "Jin Yong Collection." In August, he was ranked fourth among literary masters of the 20th century in the book "20th Century Chinese Literature Masters Collection," following Lu Xun, Shen Congwen, and Ba Jin. On October 25, Peking University awarded Jin Yong the title of "Professor of Golden Reputation." In December, the biography "Literary Knight—A Biography of Jin Yong" was simultaneously published in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China.
In 1998, he received the "Lifetime Achievement Award in Literary Creation" from the Hong Kong government; international academic seminars on Jin Yong's novels were held in the United States, China Taiwan, Kunming, and Hangzhou. In 1999, he began the third major revision of 15 novels. In 2000, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region awarded him the highest honor, the "Grand Bauhinia Medal." Peking University hosted the "International Academic Seminar on Jin Yong." In 2001, he was awarded the Lifetime Dedication Award at the 9th "Global Chinese Cultural and Art Heritage Award." In 2002, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2003, he ranked second in the "Top Ten Cultural Icons of the 20th Century in China," second only to Lu Xun. In October, he attended the "Hua Shan Lun Jian" ().
