Features: The College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) is an achievement test. Achievement tests have the advantages of strong scientific rigor in question design, high reliability and validity. However, achievement tests also have their disadvantages: the questions often contain many fixed patterns and templates. In reality, a set of exam questions is merely a specific manifestation and variation of these fixed patterns and templates. If you practice extensively and discern the patterns of question-setting, it becomes easy to overcome the challenges of the CET-4. Many students even score higher than their actual abilities, often achieving scores significantly above their proficiency. The CET-4 is very similar to the TOEFL exam abroad, both being achievement tests. Many Chinese students with limited English proficiency can score relatively high after practicing a certain number of TOEFL test papers. Scoring 600 on TOEFL in China is no longer unusual. The same principle applies to the CET-4—mastering past papers is a shortcut. Currently, there are dozens of versions of books containing past exam questions. Based on a comprehensive review of these books, we have conducted extensive work to develop the unique features of this book:
1. Answer Verification
Some students may wonder: Is it even a problem if the answers are wrong? Let’s be honest—based on the data we’ve collected, it’s difficult to find a single book without incorrect answers among the numerous available resources, even those that are highly regarded. Many students are baffled by wrong answers and annotations after completing the questions. For the same question, checking three books might yield three different answers, leaving them unsure which one to trust. Therefore, this book uniquely emphasizes the importance of verifying the correctness and uniqueness of answers, which is considered a fresh approach in this field.
2. Full Translation
Translation is an excellent method for improving the English proficiency of non-English majors. Through dedicated effort, this book provides full translations for all sections except listening, fully revealing both the surface and underlying meanings of CET-4 test questions. This serves as a reference when students struggle to understand the content. More importantly, it transforms the entire exam into a translation training exercise, thereby fundamentally enhancing their English skills.
3. In-depth Explanations
A common experience for students reading books is that many provide explanations for questions in a very arbitrary manner—"explaining extensively what you already know, yet glossing over or omitting what you don’t." Many books explain difficult questions with vague statements like, "It contradicts the context, so it’s the wrong answer." The compilers of this book are all experienced teachers deeply involved in teaching, and they are very familiar with students’ challenges. Based on extensive statistical data accumulated from teaching, we provide in-depth explanations for the questions. If 90% of test-takers answer a question correctly, it won’t be explained; but if more than half get it wrong, it will be thoroughly analyzed without avoiding the key issues. This makes the doubts clearer and the difficulties more prominent—hence our confidence in calling this section "in-depth explanations."
Based on a comprehensive and scientific analysis of the needs of CET-4 examinees, we have devoted ourselves to the compilation, annotation, and translation of this book. The answers, annotations, and translations in this book are accurate, targeted, and authoritative. We recommend using the complete set of past papers as the primary material for intensive pre-exam training, rather than relying on predictions or guesswork. We emphasize that practicing full past papers helps revisit the key and challenging aspects of college English teaching, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding of English knowledge and mastery of language skills. Anyone who attempts shortcuts, seeks tricks, or relies on predictions will ultimately face repeated failures. Therefore, we must start with solid fundamentals, including vocabulary and grammar, and then systematically improve reading, listening, writing, and translation skills. In the final stages before the exam, practicing several more full sets of past papers will allow for practical application of knowledge and skills, helping identify and bridge gaps—this is the true path to success in passing the CET-4.
