Features: Carl Czerny's 25 Piano Miniature Exercises for Small Hands is primarily designed to develop intermediate techniques for young piano students with small hands. The music throughout the book is filled with a sense of playfulness, featuring only a small number of seventh chords with seventh intervals and broken octaves. Most of the connected playing techniques are within the range of sixths. Small hands can play them with ease, and their technical progression is roughly similar to the latter half of Op. 849 and the first half of Op. 999. Moreover, the training content is richer and more diverse, not only including intermediate techniques for finger agility and smooth running but also strengthening specialized training in melody, chords, counterpoint, double notes, ornamentation, repeated notes, and complex rhythms. It pays special attention to left-hand techniques and training in singing, lyrical melodies, which are often lacking in Op. 849 and Op. 299. This is an exemplary intermediate technique exercise book with rich musical charm and clearly defined training objectives.
Each piece in the book is annotated with "Key Practice Points," highlighting the learning focus, technical difficulties, and precautions for practice, serving as a reference for discovering the training functions of each piece. Like other of Czerny's exercise collections, the original numbering of the pieces in this book is not the sequence for instrumental training. The most technically challenging pieces are numbers 3, 6, 9, 15, 21, 23, and 24, and it is common to learn these seven exercises later. However, the selection of each teaching exercise should be determined by the learner's current skill level and the need to develop techniques. Not only can the original order of the exercise book be adjusted, but the number of pieces each person selects to study can also vary. Additionally, consideration should be given to the comprehensiveness of technical training types and the contemporaneity of technical styles. It is advisable not to limit the selection to a single exercise book but to continuously choose excellent exercises from different countries and eras with similar technical levels to enrich the training. Piano teaching methods are personalized and constantly evolving.
After training with this book for a period of time, if the fingers have developed to the point where they can stretch to play octaves, the learner can directly move on to the latter half of the intermediate technique training—such as practicing the latter half of Op. 299 or other exercises of similar difficulty. In China's growing trend of children learning the piano, the age of piano students is generally younger, and their musical development often outpaces their physical development. Therefore, this classic exercise book, which balances artistry and technicality, is urgently needed to improve their skills in a timely manner. For students with larger hands, they can also utilize the melodic advantages of this collection, which are excellent for training singing performance, and select pieces as needed based on teaching requirements.
If a learner not only practices diligently and finds the pieces engaging but also discusses them with a sense of fun, they will become an interesting interpreter of piano music.
