Publishing Date: 2005-06-01
Features: This textbook consists of 12 chapters, each representing a specific topic. The first page of each chapter provides a brief description of the English communicative level that PETS candidates should achieve in that chapter. Each chapter is further divided into 1-5 units, with each unit covering a part of the communicative situations related to the topic. The textbook contains a total of 28 units, each including:
1. Dialogues
Several dialogue materials are designed based on the theme of the lesson. The dialogues strive for realistic scenarios and natural, appropriate language, primarily used for training listening and speaking skills. Each dialogue is preceded by one or two sentences that set the context, helping learners understand the dialogue.
2. Texts
Each lesson reflects and represents a specific topic. To aid in comprehension, 3 to 4 short questions are provided at the end of each text.
3. Vocabulary and Phrases
Words and phrases that appear in the dialogues and texts are listed here, along with their international phonetic symbols, parts of speech, Chinese translations, and Chinese translations of phrases.
4. Notes
Notes are provided for both dialogues and texts, covering three aspects:
- Introducing relevant cultural background knowledge to deepen candidates' understanding of the dialogues and texts.
- Highlighting difficulties in the dialogues and texts from grammatical and lexical perspectives.
- Translating difficult sentences in the texts and providing examples to illustrate language points, thereby broadening candidates' knowledge.
5. Exercises
Exercises are carefully designed for each unit's theme, allowing candidates to assess their learning progress. The question types largely align with the exam syllabus to help candidates prepare for the PETS exam.
6. Supplementary Readings
To enable candidates to gain a deeper understanding of related topics and improve their reading skills, a supplementary reading is provided at the end of each unit. The textbook also includes 6 appendices at the end:
(1) Communicative Topics Table
(2) Functions and Notions Table
(3) Grammar Topics Table
(4) Language Skills Table
(5) Answers for All Units (including text questions, listening exercise transcripts, and after-class exercise answers)
(6) Vocabulary and Phrases Summary Table
The accompanying MP3CD includes recordings of dialogues, texts, new words, after-class listening materials, and supplementary reading transcripts. It can be played on computers, as well as CD players, VCD players, and DVD players with MP3 functionality.
