Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) was an English novelist and the sister of Emily Bronte. She was born in a remote village in the North of England, the daughter of a poor clergyman. She and several of her sisters were sent to a harsh and poorly conditioned boarding school. Charlotte worked as a teacher and a governess, and in 1842, she and her sister Emily went to Brussels to study French and classical literature. Charlotte's works primarily depict the solitude, resistance, and struggles of impoverished petty bourgeoisie, and are considered part of the "outstanding group" led by Dickens, which was referred to by Marx. Jane Eyre was her debut novel and also her masterpiece, and it remains popular with readers today. Charlotte also published poetry collections, and her other novels include Shirley (1849), Villette (1853), and The Professor (1857).
