Learning calligraphy requires copying as a necessity. A single script book can be used for a period of time, or even for a lifetime. However, copying is merely a means—it is entering the script—to grasp the brushwork characteristics, structural rules, and compositional variations of the script. Exiting the script is the ultimate goal. Simply put, the initial stage of exiting the script means writing freely without referring to the book, so that any character can achieve the form and spirit of the original script. Of course, this requires a long learning process. Many calligraphy enthusiasts often focus more on entering the script and less on exiting the script practice, making it difficult to succeed when creating in a certain script style. Collected-character exercises are an important intermediate step between entering and exiting the script, as well as an effective way to evaluate the results of entering and copying the script.
"The Xiling Seal Society Collected-Character Works Series" will be a great helper in your calligraphy learning journey.
