Features: The phrase "short and exquisite" in the title of short and exquisite prose carries significant meaning. It's challenging to be both short and exquisite—neither is easy to achieve. Many clever people opt to write long essays, discussing events, sharing reflections, or recounting processes. As long as the overall structure is well-handled, the success rate remains relatively high. Short poems and short novels are also difficult to write. Many people, aware of this difficulty, turn to writing long novels or long poems, where the clutter and redundancy often go unnoticed. It's like wearing a long robe—whatever shortcomings there are inside, whether in the body or the clothes, are all concealed. Stage magicians even hide bottles and jars of varying sizes inside their robes. This makes the robe appear even more magnificent. If the robe is too short, it becomes a short jacket, and one might accidentally reveal something "small," making it even harder to perform any tricks. In beauty pageants, contestants often wear swimsuits to show off their beauty, leaving no room for ugliness to hide. Writers who specialize in short essays are those who rise to the challenge. However, not everyone overcomes this difficulty and succeeds. Success belongs to the wise. Even if they haven't mastered all eighteen martial arts, they have at least practiced in other fields. For example, many skilled writers come from the realms of poetry and fiction. The more such skilled writers there are, the more beneficial it is for the development of prose.
The good works that caught my eye in 2004 may not necessarily have been published that year. From the perspectives of appreciation and collection, they have been included, forming a beautiful mosaic with the masterpieces of that year. Some of the selected works still feature prominent writers whose works are worth rereading and savoring, revealing their long-term writing prowess and judgment on matters over time.
