The Core Issue in the Ancient vs. Modern Debate: Schmitt's Doctrine and Strauss's Thesis

Author: (German) Mayer
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-03-01
Features: This is a combined volume of two works by Professor Mayer——《Schmitt's Doctrine》, published in 1998, is the longest of Mayer's published works to date;——《Strauss's Thesis》, newly published this year, was originally titled Das theologisch-politische Problem and was changed to its current title upon the author's agreement. The second book is too short for a separate Chinese translation, so with the author's consent, the two books were combined. Mayer's Chinese translation of The Secret Dialogue is also a combined volume of multiple essays—the author prefers short essays, all centered around Schmitt and Strauss. This book can be considered a continuation of The Secret Dialogue, though combined, it primarily addresses the same issue of Schmitt and Strauss—the substantive expression is the "theological-political problem." Professor Mayer proposed naming this combined Chinese translation "The Theological-Political Problem," but in the context of Chinese linguistics, it would be more appropriate to call it "Core Issues in the Ancient-Modern Controversy"—tentatively considered a translation of Das theologisch-politische Problem. The lecture manuscript The Relationship Between Philosophy and Theology by Strauss, which I suggested the author include as an appendix in this book, is specially noted here.
