In 1866, governments around the world paid close attention to a strange, mysterious, and inexplicable event that occurred at sea. Major newspapers and magazines reported on this incident. For a time, opinions were divided, and people were in an uproar. The truth was, a "giant creature" had appeared at sea, emitting phosphorescent light and being much larger and faster than a whale. However, biologists refused to accept the idea of such a creature existing in the ocean. Yet, the facts themselves could not be denied—ships continued to encounter this monster off the east coast of Australia, in the Pacific Ocean, and on the Atlantic Sea. Believers and skeptics argued endlessly about the "monster issue," but six months later, wit had defeated science. The "giant creature" was completely denied.
