Sixteenth-Century Travelogue of Southern China (Famous Translations of the History of Sino-foreign Relations) ((Famous Translations of the History of Sino-foreign Relations))

Author: Boqie She
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2002-12-01
Features: This volume includes three reports by Portuguese and Spanish envoys visiting southern China from 1550 to 1575. The reports and their authors will be discussed in the introduction, while this preface only addresses some issues related to compiling the book. The three travel accounts of Europeans in southern China in the 16th century included in this book—Portuguese Pereira's Report on China, Portuguese Krus's China, and Spanish Ratd's Embassy to Fujian and Account of the Chinese Affairs of the Great Ming—have been extensively introduced by the original compiler, Boqie She, and need no repetition here. It should be noted that their stay in China was not long, and they did not speak Chinese, so their descriptions of China are not all accurate.
