Brother Joseph Huang passed away on November 22, 1994, ending his brief life of forty-one years. However, his contributions to fostering connections between the Tang history academies on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and promoting academic exchanges between Hong Kong and the mainland have left an indelible legacy. To commemorate Joseph’s efforts in academia, eight of his representative articles have been selected and compiled, along with friendly remembrances by his former colleagues, as a tribute to his passing. Joseph’s main research areas span three aspects: the East Asian world during the Sui and Tang dynasties, research on Wu Zetian, and Tang Dynasty social customs. This book is organized according to these three fields, with papers on similar topics selected from sources more readily available in mainland China. Joseph placed great importance on dynamic research, regularly writing research updates for scholars on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, demonstrating his deep understanding of research information. A Review and Reflection on Recent Research in the History of the Sui and Five Dynasties showcases his strengths in this regard. Notes on Sima Guang’s Records of Antiquity on the Sui Dynasty reflects Joseph’s dedication to tracing historical sources and comparing different historical materials, revealing his diligent attitude toward research.
