Features: This book is Tolstoy's masterpiece. The material for this long novel was provided by the prosecutor Kony, based on a real-life story: a noble young man seduced a maid from his aunt's household. The maid became pregnant and was driven out of the house, later becoming a prostitute. She was later tried for stealing money. The nobleman attended the trial as a juror, met the woman he had seduced before, and was deeply plagued by a sense of guilt. He applied to the judge for permission to marry her, hoping to atone for his sins.
