Features: This is an informative book. The first half focuses on historical narration, emphasizing reviews of literary history. The second half is dedicated to discussing writing techniques, using examples from classical and modern literature to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of writing. This approach provides readers with a historical perspective while offering rich material for reflection. It captures the key issues and is easy to understand, making it accessible for general readers to learn and improve.
Regarding Chinese language, I am an outsider. However, having taught Chinese literature at a middle school and occasionally engaged in literary pursuits, the bookstore entrusted me with the task of writing this book. I casually agreed at the time but quickly realized it was not an easy endeavor. To do it well, thorough research and exploration are essential, which requires ample time. In this turbulent era, I struggled to find solitude for deep study. Although the bookstore repeatedly extended the deadline, there were unavoidable flaws in my work, perhaps even enough to land me in a "writing clinic."
Nevertheless, I believe that even though spoken by someone who is unwell, what is discussed here still holds some value as a healthy approach. In this small book, the first part consists of six chapters focused on narration, while the second part has eight chapters dedicated to writing techniques. My intention is to help readers gain a basic understanding of writing before delving into the methods. This not only makes it easier to start but also allows them to grasp the core issues, avoiding confusion.
I know some teachers are so serious when teaching that their eyes never leave the book and their mouths are always full of moral lessons. Similarly, some writers are equally serious when writing, drawing inspiration from classical figures like Yang Xiong and Ma Rong or philosophies like Zhuangzi and Xunzi. Although I have stood at the podium and wielded a pen, I am fully aware of the vast gap between me and them. Whether teaching or writing, I always approach it casually. As long as my audience or readers find it interesting, I hope it brings them some benefit. I speak directly to the point, and that is all.
