Don Quixote is one of the most internationally renowned and influential Spanish literary masterpieces and also one of the greatest works of Western literature. It is a milestone in the history of European novel development. Cervantes' masterpiece is a satirical novel about chivalry, divided into two volumes. The novel depicts the protagonist, Don Quixote, who, obsessed with chivalric romances, becomes delusional and decides to go on adventures as a knight-errant. He recruits a peasant from his village, Sancho Panza, as his squire, and takes a farmer's daughter from the neighboring village, Dulcinea del Toboso, as his ideal love. He embarks on three adventures, where he does many absurd things. In the end, he is defeated by his friends disguised as the Knight of the White Moon, abandons his quest for knight-errantry, and falls ill shortly after returning home. On his deathbed, he realizes his mistake in being too to chivalric romances.
