Features: The study of sketching portraits holds a very important position in the entire process of learning sketching. Portrait training is one of the key subjects in character sketching. Understanding and familiarizing oneself with the proportions and structures of the human head, as well as its distinctive features, is essential for every student learning sketching. Since the spiritual demeanor and distinctive features of a person are primarily concentrated in the head, the importance of learning portrait sketching is evident. In addition to paying attention to basic sketching concepts such as the outline, value, proportions, perspective, lines, volume, space, and texture of the subject, students must also master the anatomical knowledge of the head that influences its external shape and the basic proportional relationships of the facial features. These are fundamental and essential knowledge for beginners to systematically grasp the basics and expressive forms of portrait sketching.
Value painting, line-based painting, and the combination of line and value are the most commonly used techniques for creating sketch portraits. Among these, value painting is the most versatile and is frequently used by students during portrait sketching. Value painting utilizes the varying layers of light and shadow and the changes in clarity to shape and depict the subject. It is relatively easy for beginners to grasp and understand this method, and it also yields quick and effective results. Line-based painting pays less attention to light and shadow and focuses more on the expression of structures and the transitions of form lines. All lines have variations in weight, clarity, thickness, and thinness. Unlike traditional Chinese ink line drawing, it somewhat resembles structural sketching in design.
The combination of line and value is a comprehensive technique that integrates both value and line. It is commonly used in sketches. This book is primarily aimed at students' portrait sketching training and is divided into different topics, including a 3/4 side view of a young woman, a front view of a young man, a side view of a young woman, and a side view of an elderly woman. Each topic includes explanations of portrait knowledge, demonstrations of painting steps, and critiques of outstanding works. The book strives to provide detailed and highly instructive content to offer students the best possible assistance.
