The Flower Monk Lu Zhishen, originally named Lu Da, was a guard in the regional military headquarters. He killed the town gatekeeper Zheng Tu for mistreating the father and daughter of Jin Cuilian with three punches and was pursued by the authorities. Fleeing to Mount Wutai, he shaved his head and became a monk, changing his name to Lu Zhishen. Unable to endure the strict rules of Buddhist monasteries, he drunkenly smashed the mountain gate, destroyed the golden statue, and was sent by the abbot to the Imperial Capital’s Xiangguo Temple to guard a vegetable garden. He kicked the vagrants who stole vegetables into the manure pit and uprooted a weeping willow tree, gaining a reputation far and wide.
