Features: Basic Pattern Design was established as a course at the inception of modern Chinese art and craft education. Over the decades, it has been passed down through generations with little change in content and methods. Today, the wave of technological revolution has challenged all disciplines in higher education, making the reform of the Pattern Design teaching system imperative. In my opinion, Basic Pattern Design and Drawing Fundamentals serve as the foundation of a pyramid, yet they are higher than ordinary basic courses because they encompass and integrate the needs of specialized design courses. New design concepts tell us that Pattern Design has evolved into a discipline connected with many interdisciplinary fields such as psychology, aesthetics, ergonomics, logic, and sociology. Therefore, to grasp the core of Pattern Design, we must first strengthen the teaching of fundamental theories, then change learning habits and ways of thinking—starting from imitation and observation and moving toward the creation of abstract forms—to suit the characteristics of applicable patterns. Gradually, we can add the representation of nature, enabling students to enter the new realm of decorative modeling more quickly.
