Features: The "Selected English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary" published in collaboration between the Commercial Press and Oxford University Press, first released in early 1986, has been printed 12 times to date and has been distributed over 1 million copies domestically and worldwide, enjoying great popularity among readers. The "Selected Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian Dictionary," published in 1986, has also been reprinted four times. Based on the editorial experience of these two dictionaries and in line with China's current development towards all-round reform and opening-up, our press has specially launched the "Selected Series" of bilingual bidirectional (Foreign-Chinese, Chinese-Foreign) dictionaries. In addition to the two already published dictionaries, new languages—Japanese, German, and French—have been added, making a total of five languages: "Selected English-Chinese and Chinese-English Dictionary," "Selected French-Chinese and Chinese-French Dictionary," "Selected German-Chinese and Chinese-German Dictionary," "Selected Japanese-Chinese and Chinese-Japanese Dictionary," and "Selected Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian Dictionary."
Compiling foreign language dictionaries independently by Chinese scholars often struggles with issues such as the standardization of language, the scope of word selection, and the reflection of new linguistic phenomena. Foreign original dictionaries may also lack relevance to the needs of Chinese readers. To address this, this series of dictionaries pioneers a collaborative publishing approach by working with renowned foreign publishing houses in the field of dictionary publication. These publishers include: Oxford University Press (Hong Kong), France's Larousse, Germany's Langenscheidt, Japan's Tōyō Shuppan, and Russia's Russkiy Yazyk. By adopting methods such as using newly published, suitable dictionaries as the basis or having experts from both China and abroad review the preliminary drafts, the dictionaries ensure precise word selection, concise definitions, and relevant examples, thereby achieving a balance between foreign language usage conventions and the needs of Chinese readers.
This series of dictionaries is a practical language reference tool, suitable for both beginners and intermediate learners, as well as administrative staff, secretaries, and professionals for daily problem-solving and reference. The dictionaries are compactly organized, clearly presented, and feature a portable size, making them an ideal tool for people from all walks of life.
