When people step onto the streets and wander through the dazzling metropolis, the ocean of information that hits them is overwhelming. Large slogans hanging from shopping malls, storefront signs of specialty stores, a variety of product packaging, colorful posters, road signs, vehicle advertisements, shopping bags in people's hands, and hang tags on goods—all reflect the charming allure of typography design. Typography intertwines with brands, graphics, and colors, radiating a dazzling brilliance of the era. Modern typography design has permeated every aspect of people's lives, conveying information, delighting the eyes, and touching the soul. As a natural and humanistic symbolic sign, typography's inherent expressive features have created an extraordinary visual language. Modern text no longer content itself with being mundane; with its fresh and refined taste, it awakens the stirrings and resonance within people's hearts. Today, in the hands of modern designers who skillfully utilize text, it possesses a magical power, giving text more tension and emotional impact than concrete graphics. Its unique guiding role creates an orderly spatial aesthetic. Typographic design elements have become the protagonists of design. The ever-changing combinations of text perform a game of typography. Through the interplay of size, overlap, alignment, and deconstruction of text, an unordered, imperfect beauty is created, forming multi-layered visual interest. Today's typography design presents a diverse design landscape, reflecting people's ways of thinking, lifestyle trends, national sentiments, and the interpretation of textual meaning. As a professional foundational course in higher education, the teaching of typography has become a crucial component of visual communication design. Practice has shown us that neglecting the foundational training of typography will bring significant obstacles to future design. In a sense, typography design combines professional characteristics, so during design training, it must be approached systematically, with every step treated with care. For this reason, we have compiled this textbook according to the principles of teaching, enabling students to systematically understand the basic concepts and related theoretical knowledge of this course, as well as various fundamental typography design methods. At the same time, we have selected some outstanding works from both domestic and international fields as examples, including the designs of renowned domestic and international designers, as well as the works of creative young students. Due to time constraints, the names of some students have been difficult to trace, and we extend our gratitude here.
