Features: The era we live in is one of great development in visual media. In recent decades, in many countries—among them, China and the United States—important mass media has been primarily television and film. The production of film and television programs has been a job of great interest to many people. In the past, due to expensive equipment and complex operation, the creation of film and television programs was merely a task that could be completed by a few specialized professionals. The development of computer technology has led to the emergence and popularization of computer-based digital film and television production systems. With the widespread use of digital nonlinear editing systems in film and television production, the requirements for the quality of film and television image compositing and special effects have become increasingly high. Since the discreet company released its new compositing and special effects software, combustion, it has, along with other subsequently launched digital compositing software, become a milestone in the development of the film and television production field, marking the official arrival of the high-quality digital compositing era on the PC platform. Functionally, these software programs have essentially segmented digital post-production systems based on specific applications and market demands, separating digital post-compositing and special effects production systems from digital nonlinear editing systems. Under the premise of ensuring no compression and high image quality, they enable independent production work that is independent of video input/output hardware (while also fully supporting mainstream high-quality video input/output hardware), making them a new creative tool for flexible film and television compositing and special effects production. Combustion is a digital film and television compositing and special effects production software that can run on Windows and Mac environments. It includes a series of powerful tools for digital video and audio acquisition/output, graphic and subtitle design, vector animation, digital film and television compositing, and nonlinear editing. Combustion can be seamlessly integrated with 3dsmax to complete complex special effects shots and three-dimensional space compositing. Using combustion, users can interactively complete motion tracking, keyframe setting, color correction, scene background synchronization, and rendering in a true three-dimensional environment, helping film and television production personnel significantly improve their work efficiency and focus their main attention on design and creation. This textbook aims to help students in related fields and readers interested in digital film and television production deeply understand the necessary professional theoretical knowledge and form a relatively standardized professional knowledge structure during the practical process of using digital film and television production tools to create film and television programs and achieve film and television special effects. The book primarily combines the basic theories of digital image processing and digital video processing to explain the practical applications of digital film and television production. In terms of content, it seeks to avoid both purely describing system functions and listing computer software operation instructions, as well as the impractical issues found in traditional theoretical textbooks. The book includes numerous specialized learning examples. Readers are encouraged to refer to these examples for repeated practice, mastering the practical skills of digital film and television compositing while understanding the basic theories. After each chapter, a certain number of thought questions are provided to assess readers' grasp of the relevant knowledge and to encourage active thinking during the learning and practical process, fostering independent problem-solving skills. The accompanying CD-ROM of this book contains standard-definition digital video materials, static image materials, image sequence materials, and teaching example workspace files that align with the textbook content, for readers to use and reference during their learning. It is hoped that these materials will help everyone better master the knowledge introduced in the book. Based on the authors' experience, it is recommended that universities and colleges teach this course with 48–64 academic hours. In this book, we have focused on explaining the problems that beginners may encounter during learning and practice, and have clarified many completely incorrect or severely biased concepts found in other books and articles. For example, the term "footage" used in the original documentation of combustion should specifically refer to "materials or video clips" in post-production. If it is misinterpreted as "script" (the term "script" in English only corresponds to script and is never associated with footage), it will completely confuse the concept of "storyboard script" in advertising, animation production, television dramas, special programs, and film shooting, or the "scripting language" in computer programming. Beginners should pay attention to distinguishing between these terms. This book is one of the research project achievements undertaken by the authors and was completed with the help and support of discreet. During the writing process, we received strong support from Mr. Liao Xiangzhong, Director of the Science and Art Department at Beijing Broadcasting University. We would like to express our gratitude to him here. At the same time, we are also grateful to Mr. Jiang Zhongqiang and Ms. Fan Lanting of discreet. Additionally, we would like to thank Mr. Cao Yunsheng of the Science and Art Department at Beijing Broadcasting University for providing much help in the writing of this book. This book is part of the "Textbooks for Higher Education Graphic Image and Multimedia Professional" series. It combines the basic theories of digital film and television technology to explain in detail the application techniques of digital film and television compositing and special effects production, with the main practical environment using discreet's new version of digital film and television compositing and special effects production software, combustion 3. The book is divided into 18 chapters, each of which includes an introduction to the relevant basic knowledge of digital film and television production as well as explanations of digital film and television compositing and special effects production examples for readers to practice. The accompanying CD-ROM of the book includes all the materials mentioned in the book. This book is written for beginners and intermediate readers, emphasizing the combination of theory and practice. It is hoped that the publication of this book will help those currently engaged in digital film and television post-production work or those planning to enter the digital film and television production field to understand and master the basic knowledge of digital film and television production and become familiar with the various applications of the combustion software. This book can not only serve as a textbook for undergraduate courses in related fields but also be used by training institutions as part of their training materials, combined with discreet's authorized training management center to organize teaching, training, and certification exams.
