Monkey King Sun Wukong possesses immense powers. He goes to the Dragon Palace to obtain the Iron Rod of Subduing the Sea— (Ruyi Gold-Banded Rod), angering the Jade Emperor, who sends a million heavenly soldiers and generals to (subdue) him. Sun Wukong is invincible in battle, winning every fight, but finally falls victim to the schemes of Laozi the Great, who traps him in the Eight Trigrams Furnace for 49 days. Sun Wukong doesn’t die in the fire but is instead transformed into a copper-skull, iron-armed, fire-eyed immortal.
