Nathaniel Hawthorne, born in 1804 and died in 1864, was a renowned American writer and a pioneer of romantic novels and psychological fiction in American literary history. The Scarlet Letter is his masterpiece. The Scarlet Letter tells a love tragedy that unfolds during the colonial period in North America. The heroine, Hester Prynne, marries the physician Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester is publicly punished and forced to wear the scarlet letter "A" as a mark of adultery. However, Hester remains steadfast and refuses to reveal the father of her child. Hester's husband arrives in North America from England and witnesses Hester's punishment. He then decides to find the father of her child and seek revenge. At the time, Dimmesdale is beloved by the local residents for his outstanding work, but he is gradually weakening under the weight of his heavy conscience. The people arrange for Chillingworth to live with the minister to treat his illness. Hester, feeling guilty toward her husband, agrees to Chillingworth not to reveal their legal marriage publicly. As a result, a cruel act of revenge unfolds. In the end, Dimmesdale cannot bear the condemnation of his conscience and publicly admits his guilt, dying in Hester's arms. Chillingworth, however, becomes a slave to the devil and becomes a true sinner.
