Features: The New Standard English (Fourth Grade, Classroom Textbook) is the first set of "one-stop" primary and secondary school English textbooks jointly developed by our press and Macmillan Education, a renowned educational publishing institution in the UK. This series was launched based on the National English Curriculum Standards for China (Experimental Version) formulated by the Ministry of Education, following extensive research and academic discussions. The principal editor of this textbook is Professor Chen Lin from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and the associate editor is Associate Professor Lu Ziwen from Central China Normal University. The British editor, Printha Ellis, and contributor Naomi Simmons are internationally acclaimed experts in English textbook development. Other distinguished contributors include Wang Jiaji, a special-grade English teacher and education researcher, and Su Lihong.
This volume, New Standard English (For Grade 3 Starters), Second Grade, is designed for the second semester of Grade 3 in primary schools. The book is divided into 11 modules (Modules), including one final review module. Following the same structure as the previous grade, each module consists of three units (Units). Typically, the first unit introduces the language content for the module, while the second and third units provide task-based exercises, including a song or short poem. The purpose of learning these songs or poems is threefold: to cultivate students' sense of rhythm and language intuition, improve pronunciation accuracy, and introduce certain Western cultures through familiar rhymes and poems known to children in English-speaking countries. Some uncommon words in these materials are not required to be learned for general use outside the context of the rhymes.
In this grade, students will further develop their ability to describe people, objects, and animals, with a focus on describing actions. They will learn to describe both habitual and ongoing actions, as well as time expressions and numbers. The textbook introduces new grammatical concepts, but it does not require teachers to explain grammar or for students to memorize it. Instead, the emphasis is on helping students begin to apply these structures in context. Teachers are advised to pay attention to this aspect during instruction.
