Features: Classics are the treasures left behind by time, portraits and annotations of human nature. The significance of classics lies in their enduring freshness; no matter how time changes, they remain an unchanging landscape on the bookshelves of readers. In the ever-changing flow of time and life, where nothing can be repeated, classics are the words, sounds, and expressions that have conquered time. Those sincere statements, those fearless cries, those reflections on the human spirit awaken our past hopes, inspire our present courage, and free us from vanity, emptiness, and doubt about the future. The figures of these wise men and the timeless words they left behind purify our souls, shake our spirits, and teach us what can be missed but not forgotten, and what is fleeting yet invaluable. The authors included in "Glimpses of Masterpieces of Fiction" are all scavengers and pioneers of modern Chinese literature, as well as experimenters and pioneers of various new artistic forms. No wonder Shi Zhecun, when speaking with me a few years ago about the various artistic explorations of his younger contemporaries in the 1980s, particularly the attempts of many "avant-garde" modernist techniques such as symbolism, impressionism, and stream of consciousness, was somewhat disdainful and proudly said: "All of these, we did in the 1930s, and even better than them. Not a bit fresh." Indeed, every era has its own literature. But classic literature does not belong solely to its own time; it also belongs to later generations of readers who can appreciate and share an artistic connection with it. Life and Death on a Field is a timeless classic by Xiao Hong, offering profound and insightful interpretations of the eternal questions of human nature and survival. This reflection on life, death, and survival surpasses that of most writers of the same generation. However, it also has shortcomings in artistic expression, some of which are referred to as textual fragmentation. In other words, the latter half of the novel shifts from the theme of human survival and death to the issue of revolutionary prospects. In his preface to Life and Death on a Field, Lu Xun called it a "forceful portrayal of the resilience of life and the struggle against death" of the people in the north. This work established Xiao Hong's status as an anti-Japanese writer, making her one of the most notable figures of the 1930s. Especially with Lu Xun's preface and Hu Feng's postscript, Life and Death on a Field became a classic text embodying the national spirit of its time. The conception of this novel began during Xiao Hong's time in Harbin. Fragments of the first half were serialized in the Literary column of Harbin's International Herald from April to June 1934. The entire book consists of seventeen chapters. From the th chapter Wheat Field to the tenth chapter Ten Years, the author uses a deeply emotional tone to depict the impoverished and helpless lives of Northeast farmers. They suffer cruel exploitation from landlords, working from dawn till dusk, facing the sky with their backs and the earth with their faces, toiling tirelessly. Even after bending their backs and limping, they remain hungry and malnourished, tormented by starvation and disease. In this life no better than that of beasts, some women give birth to deformed children. Xiao Hong, with the meticulous observation of a female author, vividly portrays the tragic fates of several peasant women.
