Features: The works included in this volume are not the author's own writings but three collections compiled by the author to help students understand and study Chinese classical literature. These collections were once used as teaching materials or reference materials for the Chinese Department of Tsinghua University. The collection "Selections on Literary Criticism" included in this volume is a renowned piece of traditional Chinese literary theory. It ranges from ancient works like the Preface to the Book of Songs and Cao Pi's Discussions of Literature to modern works like Zhang Taiyan's Essays on National Studies·Literature Section. It includes comprehensive discussions on both poetry and prose, totaling 54 articles. The second collection "Biographical Notes on Ancient and Modern Poems" selects famous poems or poets from the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty in China, compiling introductions, interpretations, critiques, or research insights about them from ancient and modern scholars, listed separately. The third collection "Ballads and Folk Songs" includes, in addition to the "General Principles" of the book Ancient Ballads and Proverbs and abstracts of Guo Shouyu's research papers, explanations on the definition of ballads and folk songs, the distinction between ballads and proverbs, their classification, and origins. Moreover, the author has also compiled "Examples of Ballads and Folk Songs," including over 140 ballads and related materials. At the end of this volume, as an appendix, are collected eulogies, poems, and condolence telegrams from various parties on August 12, 1948, the day of the author's death.
