Epilepsy is a common neurological disease in children. Due to children being in the stage of growth and development, their epilepsy differs from that of adults in terms of etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Moreover, some epilepsy syndromes are only seen in childhood. To meet the needs of clinical work, it is necessary to compile a specialized reference book dedicated to pediatric epilepsy. In recent years, with in-depth research in basic medicine, the continuous development of clinical neurophysiology, neuroimaging, pharmacology, and medical psychology, epilepsy has made significant progress. Many concepts have been updated, diagnostic methods have improved, and new epilepsy syndromes have been discovered. In terms of treatment, new therapies have been developed, and many new antiepileptic drugs have emerged. This new knowledge is urgently needed by clinical workers.
For this purpose, we have invited renowned experts in epilepsy, neurology, and pediatrics from China to write this book. The contributors have long been engaged in medical education and research, with rich practical experience. They have also undergone training, research, or obtained degrees abroad, understanding the latest international trends. When writing each chapter, they have combined their clinical data, work experience, and research findings, ensuring that the book remains at the forefront of the field while reflecting Chinese characteristics.
Considering the book's practicality, we have focused on epilepsy diagnosis and treatment. During the diagnostic process, electroencephalography (EEG) is one of the important tools for diagnosing epilepsy. However, there is currently no specialized book in China dedicated to pediatric EEG, so this book devotes significant to introducing the characteristics and clinical applications of pediatric EEG. In terms of treatment, the book not only provides a detailed explanation of the pharmacology and clinical applications of currently used antiepileptic drugs but also introduces new-generation antiepileptic drugs internationally. Additionally, the book discusses surgical treatment for epilepsy.
Moreover, in addition to introducing modern medical content, the book also presents the traditional Chinese medical approach to the differentiation and treatment of epilepsy, breaking the monopoly of Western medicine in the field of specialized reference books. To broaden readers' perspectives and help them understand epilepsy comprehensively, the book systematically introduces the relationship between other systemic diseases and epilepsy, aiming to improve clinical diagnostic and treatment skills.
The book strives to avoid a theoretical approach that is detached from practice, ensuring that readers not only grasp relevant theoretical knowledge but also apply it in clinical settings. This is the initial intention behind compiling the book. Whether it meets expectations remains to be tested by practice.
