Unit 6 Listening 1. Test Overview
1) Overview of the CET-6 Listening Test
The CET-6 is a higher-level requirement in the basic stage of college English. Students preparing for the CET-6 generally have already passed the CET-4 and possess a certain foundation in English. However, many candidates still feel overwhelmed by the listening section—brief audio materials that seem to vanish as soon as they're heard, or understanding the sound without grasping the meaning, or remembering the meaning but forgetting the content. They become flustered and lose focus. So, how can one improve their listening skills to the next level and successfully pass the CET-6 listening section? The first half of this book will provide a detailed description of the various question types, question-setting methods, and answer strategies in the CET-6 listening test. It will specifically analyze the difficulties candidates are likely to encounter during the listening process, while also offering abundant supplementary exercises and simulated tests. This will solidly prepare candidates, not only for passing the CET-6 listening test but also for fundamentally improving their listening skills. As a result, their reading, writing, and speaking abilities will be reinforced and enhanced, leading to overall progress in their English proficiency.
The College English Teaching Syllabus (Revised Edition) requires students, upon completing the basic stage, to understand the main ideas, key points, and relevant details of lengthy conversations, talks, reports, and lectures on familiar topics, with relatively uncomplicated sentence structures, minimal unfamiliar vocabulary, and a speaking speed of 150–170 words per minute. The significant difference between the old and new syllabi in listening requirements lies in the speed: the old syllabus set the speed at 140 words per minute, while the new one raised it to 150–170 words per minute.
Let's take a look at the main differences between the CET-6 listening test and the CET-4 listening test: The CET-6 listening materials are more challenging and cover a broader scope than the CET-4, with a larger vocabulary (4,200 words for CET-4, 5,500 words for CET-6), more information, richer content, and a faster speed (130–150 words per minute for CET-4, 150–170 words per minute for CET-6). This demands candidates to have a wider range of knowledge, greater vocabulary, and stronger abilities in comprehension, summarization, and analysis.
