Basic Concepts of The Effective Executive: Anyone who is responsible for an organization and can influence its results is a manager. Managers must be effective. Effectiveness can be learned! In this way, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. In this book, Drucker focuses on how a manager can be effective. This is one of Drucker's most famous management works, poured into with great effort. An effective executive generally possesses the following six characteristics:
1. Emphasizes goals and performance; does only the right things.
2. Does only one thing at a time and does only the most important thing; he sets his priorities very carefully, reviews them as needed, and resolutely discards outdated tasks or postpones less important ones; he knows that time is his most valuable resource and must be used very carefully.
3. As a knowledge worker, he knows that his contributions lie in creating new ideas, visions, and concepts; his principle is: What can I contribute? How can I motivate others to make their own contributions to achieve the overall goals? His goal is to improve overall performance.
4. When selecting top executives, he values outstanding performance and upright character. He is keenly aware that selecting talent for a key position is an extremely challenging task. Effective executives also know that no one is perfect. They know that even the most capable people have weaknesses. They focus on what a person can do, not what they cannot do. They strive to fully leverage the knowledge and skills of their team to achieve organizational goals.
5. He knows the importance of improving communication; he selectively gathers the information he needs. He knows that some things cannot be quantified, and too much information can lead to confusion and chaos.
6. He makes effective decisions.
