Features: The man treated as a pastime and the cemetery are relatively early works. The former aims to depict a kind of sorrow treated as a pastime and a melancholic atmosphere. The latter is a romance with the sweetness of early spring. The Charleston in Shanghai was a fragment written while composing the long story [China 1931], merely a technical experiment and exercise. The other five pieces—Night, The Flower Drum, The Five People in the Night Club, Black, and Graven“A”—were written under a slightly similar intention. The purpose at the time was simply to portray some who had fallen from life, some declining Pletot.
