Features: The literatures of the Nordic countries share both similarities, even identical developmental processes, trends, and characteristics, as well as significant differences. Writing a literary history that spans centuries from ancient times to the present while also addressing the unique achievements and features of five distinct countries presents considerable challenges. Poor execution may lead to a disjointed and overlapping narrative, or result in a country-specific history that lacks coherence. To address this, the author adopts a chronological division, parallel discussions of the achievements, development, status, and trends of the literatures of the five countries. Each chapter provides an overview of the historical and social context of that period, placing the Nordic region within the broader framework of European history, politics, culture, and literature. This approach not only highlights the unity of Nordic literature but also showcases the mutual influences among the five countries, while also offering in-depth evaluations of the unique accomplishments and renowned works of each nation during every era. As a result, the book achieves a clear and well-defined structure. A History of Nordic Literature presents a systematic account of the development of literature in the five Nordic countries from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, offering insightful analyses of the characteristics of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland, as well as their positions in world literary history. It outlines the trajectory of Nordic literary development and emphasizes the introduction of influential writers and works. This is the first monograph on Nordic literary history in China, filling a gap in the publication of foreign literature.
