Marx praised him and Sacre, among others, as a group of outstanding novelists in Britain. David Copperfield was an illegitimate child, and his stepfather was cruel and greedy. David went through many hardships and eventually found his aunt, Miss Betsey. During his studies, David boarded at his aunt's lawyer, Mr. Wickfield's house, where he formed a bond with his daughter Agnes. However, David strongly disliked the clerk named Slope hired by Wickfield. David's childhood classmate Steerforth seduced Emily, who was already engaged to Ham, and the two ran away together before their wedding. Wickfield fell into the trap designed by the cunning Slope. David's childhood landlord, Mr. Micawber, exposed Slope's various schemes. David fell in love and married Dora, the daughter of the lawyer Spencer. A fierce storm at sea caused Ham to rescue someone, but he was unfortunately swept away by a giant wave. The passenger on the ship turned out to be Steerforth, who had abducted Emily! David became a writer. However, Dora fell seriously ill and passed away. Grieving deeply, David traveled abroad. When he returned to Britain three years later, he discovered that Agnes had always loved him. They finally got married.
