—Advised by Zhou Wenzhen, life depends on nutrition. Since the existence of organisms, life and its continuation have been inseparable from dietary nutrition. Ancients recognized this truth early, noting that "eating well leads to prosperity, while fasting leads to danger," highlighting its importance. Thus, the saying "food is the foundation of life" exists. Modern science further recognizes that the abundance or deficiency of nutrients is a major cause of many diseases. Insufficient or lack of nutrition can lead to anemia, rickets, dementia, goiter, blindness, osteoporosis, and congenital deformities, while excessive nutrition can cause "luxury diseases" such as obesity, atherosclerosis, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, and diabetes. Mild cases affect health and reduce quality of life, while severe cases threaten life. With China’s economic development and rising living standards, the imbalance in nutrition has become increasingly prominent, making nutrition and health a greater focus. In response, the Chinese Nutrition Society formulated the "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents" in 1997, based on scientific research and addressing the nutritional needs and dietary deficiencies of the population, with universal guiding significance. The purpose of this series is to further popularize scientific knowledge of nutrition and health, enabling the public to master balanced diets for a stronger body, longer life, and improved national quality. The content is divided into two parts: how nutrition prevents and treats common diseases, and the relationship between dietary nutrition and different life stages. The contributors are professionals who have long worked in clinical, teaching, and research fields of nutrition, with deep insights and rich experience in handling the relationship between nutrition and health. Their writing is clear, practical, and easy to understand, making it easy to apply. We hope readers will gain extensive nutrition knowledge and apply it in daily life, contributing to disease prevention, health promotion, and building a moderately prosperous society sooner.
