—Advised by Zhou Wenzhen, life depends on nutrition. Since the existence of organisms, life and continuity have been inseparable from dietary nutrition. Ancients long recognized this truth, noting that "eating well leads to prosperity, while starvation leads to danger," highlighting its great value. Thus, the saying "food is the foundation of the people" emerged. Modern science further recognizes that the abundance or deficiency of nutrients is a major cause of many diseases. Insufficient or lack of nutrition can lead to anemia, rickets, dementia, goiter, blindness, osteoporosis, and congenital deformities, while excessive nutrition can result in "precious diseases" such as obesity, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, and diabetes. Mild cases affect health and reduce quality of life, while severe cases endanger life. With the development of China’s national economy and the gradual improvement of people’s living standards, the aforementioned nutritional imbalance has become increasingly prominent, making nutrition and health care receive greater attention. In response, the Chinese Nutrition Society formulated the "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents" in 1997, based on scientific research and addressing the nutritional needs and main deficiencies of the Chinese population, with universal guiding significance. The purpose of this series is to further popularize scientific knowledge of nutrition and health care, enabling the general public to correctly master balanced diets to strengthen the body, extend life, and improve and enhance national quality.
The content of the series is divided into two parts: one is how nutrition prevents and treats various common diseases, and the other is the relationship between dietary nutrition and different life stages. The contributors to the series are all professionals who have long worked in clinical, teaching, and research in nutrition, with deep insights and rich experience in handling the relationship between nutrition and health care. Therefore, the writing is clear, practical, and easy to understand, making it convenient to implement. We hope that readers can gain extensive knowledge of nutrition from this series and apply it in daily life, contributing to disease prevention, fitness, and strengthening the body to help the nation achieve a well-off society sooner!
