It is divided into 8 chapters, focusing on the introduction of plant cosmetics and their relationship with the skin and its organs, plant cosmetics and botany, physiological functions of plant cosmetics, bioactive components of plant cosmetics, extraction and separation of bioactive components of plant cosmetics, detection of bioactive components of plant cosmetics, formulation examples of plant cosmetics, and the application of biotechnology in plant cosmetics. The book emphasizes botany and plant chemistry, elucidating the relevant mechanisms at the molecular level, reflecting the new achievements and development trends of plant cosmetics in the past 10 years. Its purpose is to introduce the basic knowledge of plant cosmetics and the application of related technologies in plant cosmetics, both focusing on practicality and scientific rigor. This book can serve as a reference for scientific and technical personnel engaged in the research and development of plant cosmetics, as well as for new product development personnel in cosmetic factories and plant cosmetic raw material factories, as well as plant resource workers. At the same time, it provides systematic basic knowledge for those who wish to understand and use plant cosmetics.
[Preface] Plant cosmetics (phytocosmetics) are a branch of natural cosmetics. Among the numerous cosmetics, plant cosmetics stand out like a brilliant flower, blooming into a magnificent spectacle. Plant cosmetics are formulated using the rich and diverse plants in nature, extracting their plant essence—bioactive components—from various parts such as flowers, fruits, stems, leaves, and roots. Compared to traditional Chinese herbal cosmetics, plant cosmetics have a deeper and broader connotation, encompassing a wider range of plants. They are not aimed at treating diseases but rather provide excellent regulatory and physiological balance effects on the skin and hair. Cosmetics formulated with beneficial bioactive components for the human body integrate care, nutrition, and health, gaining widespread popularity and aligning with the trend of returning to nature. Today, plant cosmetics have evolved from the simple utilization of plant bodies to the stage of utilizing deeply processed plant bioactive components. The production and research of plant cosmetics have gradually integrated knowledge from multiple disciplines, including botany, plant chemistry, biochemistry, human physiology, and pharmacology, as well as advanced biotechnology, making it a multidisciplinary synthesis. This book was written by Researcher Dong Yunfa and Senior Engineer Zao Lin based on their extensive research experience and practical production practices, referencing domestic and international literature and patents. During the writing process, Professor Qiang Sheng of the Department of Plant Science, School of Life Sciences, Nanjing Agricultural University, provided strong support. Master Shan Yu from the Jiangsu Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Sciences also assisted with the book's layout. The authors express their gratitude to them all! Due to the limitations of our experience and expertise, there may be shortcomings and errors in the book. We sincerely welcome readers and experts to offer corrections and advice.
