Features: As this book is concise, its length is clearly limited, and there is considerable difficulty in the selection and writing of its content. However, the author's handling is very appropriate. Not only does it comprehensively discuss traditional topics of international law, such as the sources of international law, states and international organizations, treaty law, maritime law, and peaceful settlement of international disputes, but it also provides an incisive introduction to international regulations on various aspects of individual rights and international environmental law, which are widely concerned and valued in contemporary international relations. This allows the limited space to be well combined with detailed content. — Shi Jiuyong, Judge and President of the International Court of Justice, United Nations
The publication of this Chinese edition aims to introduce the basic principles, institutions, and research methods of modern international law to Chinese lawyers and legal learners. It is a concise read. For the views presented, readers can gain a more detailed understanding by consulting the reference in the footnotes to distinguish between different perspectives. — Thomas Brgensoll, Sean D. Murphy
This is the Chinese edition of A Concise Introduction to International Law, the English version of which was first published in 1985 and subsequently revised and republished in 1990 and 2002. The publication of this Chinese edition aims to introduce the basic principles, institutions, and research methods of modern international law to Chinese lawyers and legal learners. We are very pleased to have this opportunity to engage with our Chinese colleagues, and we are also deeply grateful to Attorney Li Zuohe for making this opportunity a reality. It is a concise read. In our efforts to succinctly present the content by synthesizing various materials, we risked distorting or oversimplifying the information at hand. To minimize this risk, we have provided English cases, sources of supplementary materials, and references to other materials. For the views presented, readers can gain a more detailed understanding by consulting the reference in the footnotes to distinguish between different perspectives. Additionally, in the final chapter, we provide detailed English materials on the methods of studying international law, especially those sources that can be found online. The selection of content in this book ultimately depends on the author's own judgment and preferences, as well as the limitations of space. One of the key considerations in determining the content and scope was to choose those parts that play a significant role in understanding the fundamental factors of contemporary international law. However, we are fully aware that there is still much room for expansion on the topics we discuss, and a vast amount of material has been left out. In this Chinese edition, we decided to retain Chapter 7 on U.S. Foreign Relations Law because we believe our Chinese colleagues may be interested in learning how international law is applied in the United States and how powers related to international law are distributed among the three different branches of the U.S. government. We hope this book will inspire readers to further study international law. In the world we live in, international law should be a discipline that all lawyers worldwide are familiar with its basic principles and concepts.
