Features: "How the Steel Was Tempered" is a "great literary work that transcends borders," holding a significant position in both Soviet and world literary history. It is regarded as a textbook for the lives of young people. Introduced to China in 1942, it is one of the most influential foreign literary works in China. The newly issued "General High School Chinese Curriculum Standards" by the Ministry of Education has designated it as a required reading for students.
Romain Rolland was deeply moved by Ostrovsky's heroic deeds and believed he "was himself a poem." In a letter to him, Rolland wrote: "Your name is to me the symbol of the highest and purest spirit of courage." He also personally wrote the preface for the French translation of "How the Steel Was Tempered."
In 1989, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China listed "How the Steel Was Tempered" as the top recommended reading among the "Ten Life Guides for Youth." In 1999, it was ranked first in the "50 Books That Moved the Republic" selection.
