Features: Public restrooms originated from human settlement, the emergence of cities, and social evolution. The construction and development of public restrooms, to some extent, ensure the normal conduct of social activities, promote the cleanliness and hygiene of urban environments, and advance the improvement and manifestation of social morals. Thus, public restrooms in cities are also a small reflection of the progress of human civilization. Public restrooms are an important urban infrastructure. They are an indispensable detail in the urban architectural and environmental system. The aesthetic and harmonious design of public restroom architecture directly impacts the overall urban architecture. Its unique architectural style, as reflected in its distinctive service functions, and the potential architectural details it adds to the city, are increasingly attracting attention and importance. At the same time, through the transmission effect of public restrooms, the civilized details of the city are reflected and refracted. Public restrooms are not only a product of environmental needs but also a significant product of the progress of human civilization. If the planning and architectural design of public restrooms fully embody and incorporate the concept of "human-centeredness" and humanitarian spirit, as well as the high public literacy demonstrated in their use, it will undoubtedly make a city more approachable and civilized.
To welcome the 2005 World Toilet Forum in Shanghai, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Urban and Rural Sanitation organized a group of theoretical researchers and professional management workers. Drawing on domestic and international research achievements and summarizing the management practices and experiences of some cities in China, they spent a year compiling this series of books titled "Public Restroom Management, Technology, and Culture." The series consists of three volumes: "Introduction to Public Restroom Management," "General Principles of Public Restroom Design," and "A Brief Discussion on Toilet Culture."
Although public restroom issues have recently garnered widespread attention from government departments and the public, with numerous research and review articles published, there has been no precedent for systematically exploring and researching the construction and management of public restrooms from multiple perspectives, such as the transformation of government public management, urban environmental construction, landscape construction, ecological construction, and cultural construction. It is hoped that the publication of this series will benefit theoretical researchers and practical workers engaged in urban and rural sanitation management in various regions.
