Favorite Movie: The Invisible Man. Haha, quite nostalgic. I'm too sentimental. Right now, I'm in Nowhere, North Carolina, daydreaming. Mom sighed and picked up the newspaper. "I hope the news agency doesn't get interested in your story," she said. "Otherwise, the good deeds you've done will be published in newspapers all over the place, and everyone will come knocking on our door." "Don't you want to be on Oprah's The Oprah Winfrey Show? Mom?" I asked, flipping the toast. She looked at me through her metal-rimmed glasses and said, "No." "Everyone wants to be on Oprah's show," I said. I wasn't sure about Mom's attitude. In our family, little disagreements are common, nothing unusual. I put the blueberry French toast and whipped cream in front of Mom and poured her coffee, adding hot milk. "This is a bribe," she sniffed and picked up the fork. She took a bite, blinked her eyes, and said, "I like being bribed." I put down my plate and snatched the syrup bottle before she could pour sugar on the French toast. Just as the doorbell rang, I had taken a bite. Mom looked at me over the fork. "Who could it be? It's only seven thirty in the morning." "Maybe it's the press information exchange?" I guessed. Mom put down the fork and gave a nervous laugh. She tightened her robe's belt and walked toward the front door, and I followed her with my breakfast. Mom opened the door. Three men in navy uniforms stood in the porch. "Mrs. Grace Corrigan?" Mom's voice sounded surprisingly calm: "Yes." The tallest one opened an ID, saying, "FBI." Mom tightly gripped the doorknob, as if she were about to shake. Then, she opened the door wider. "I think you'd better come in, gentlemen," her voice trembled slightly. Then, these people saw me. The tall man glared at me fiercely. To show up so early in the morning like that—quite intimidating.
