Features: Hu Sanchuan was born in 1930 into a poor urban family in Shanghai. In 1938, at the age of 8, while passing by a painting shop near the City God Temple, he was captivated by the illustrations of mountains, rivers, figures, flowers, and birds on paper. He couldn’t believe that a single brush could have such magical power. His talent for painting was recognized as "a prodigy," and he began to paint door gods and Kitchen Gods. Later, he learned to paint stage sets in a theater, where apprentices first helped with household chores and secretly studied painting during downtime. After the liberation, he began creating serial illustrations. In 1960, he joined Shanghai Children's Publishing House. He has dedicated himself to creating over 100 serial illustrations, along with numerous illustrations and standalone artworks, making him a diligent and prolific painter. His paper was counted stroke by stroke. His serial illustrations include The Story of the Transportation Station (awarded the Second Prize for Serial Illustration Creation at the National Level), White-Haired Girl (awarded the First Prize for Serial Illustration Creation at the National Level), The Young Guards, Wang Xiaohuo, Liu Hulan, and over 100 other works. In the early 1950s, Hu Sanchuan worked in stage design, becoming deeply familiar with the character of White-Haired Girl, which undoubtedly aided him in character portrayal. After the serial illustration White-Haired Girl was published in the 1960s, it received acclaim both domestically and internationally. People were amazed by Hu Sanchuan’s modeling skills, capturing the dynamic poses and subtle perspective relationships of the characters so vividly with black-and-white line drawings. Simultaneously, he created over 40 exquisite color illustrations on silk, published as large-format children’s storybooks, which were highly sought after by readers. Many art enthusiasts used them as reference materials for copying. Anyone familiar with Hu Sanchuan’s serial illustrations knows that his earlier works often employed pen-and-ink techniques. This style, which first appeared in Western book illustrations, is a form of hard-pen sketching related to etching. Pen-and-ink drawing requires strong sketching skills but is not traditional sketching. The artist adjusts the black, white, and gray relationships based on the composition, using the density of lines to create rhythm and mood. Hu Sanchuan was one of the earliest painters in China to use pen-and-ink techniques and one of the best masters of this style. His works are instantly recognizable even without a signature. After printing, some of his pen-and-ink works resemble etchings, with a unique charm. However, the author did not stop at his achievements. After the 1960s, especially in works depicting domestic themes, he adopted a modeling method primarily using traditional Chinese brushwork, while also enriching the scenes with pen-and-ink lines. This is vividly demonstrated in White-Haired Girl. For example, the dilapidated household items under dim lighting in the Yang family, the snowy atmosphere after Yang Bola was pushed out of the Huang family, the dusty, damp, and dark temple, and the moist, shadowy cave—all benefited from the strengths of pen-and-ink drawing. It is heartening that the author skillfully combined these two techniques, creating a style that aligns with our national aesthetic preferences while filling the monotony of line-drawing techniques. This is the painting style that has earned Hu Sanchuan fame in the world of serial illustrations. Hu Sanchuan is currently a member of the China Artists Association, a council member of the Shanghai branch of the China Artists Association, and a council member of the China Serial Illustration Research Association.
