This book is a masterpiece of the renowned French thinker, Michel Foucault, and he completed three volumes of it. Shanghai People's Publishing House translated and published it in March 2000 and printed it twice. The reason for this supplemented edition is that Shanghai People's Publishing House obtained the authorization from French Galilée to include the published content of the fourth volume of "A History of Sexuality," titled "The Battle for Unlawful Acts," as the fourth volume in this book. Taking this opportunity, the translator has revised and improved the previous translation, so the Chinese edition of "A History of Sexuality" has been published as the most complete version worldwide. In the book, Foucault attempts to outline a history of the Western discipline of the body since the 16th century using mainstream discourse. He believes that humans have the possibility to create new models of desire and pleasure to reshape the body and replace modern models of subjectivity, but he opposes sexual liberation and advocates "liberation from sex."
