Features: In 2003, the Library Journal (a theoretical academic journal) switched to book numbering under the support of Shanghai Scientific and Technical Documents Publishing House, significantly improving its market distribution. This positive outcome encouraged the editorial board to continue experimenting with this model. The 2004 annual issue focused on "The Application of Metadata in Libraries," compiling important writings from cutting-edge research in the field of contemporary library metadata applications. Additionally, in issues 4-9 of the monthly publication in 2004, a special column titled "Metadata Application Research" was established to publish a series of significant research findings. The editorial board believes that the publication of these two series of works will play a vital role in guiding the future application of metadata in China's library field. The 2004 "Theoretical Academic Annual Issue" retained its traditional approach, continuing to feature foundational research papers in the fields of library and information science and classical literature studies, which are expected to satisfy the interests of relevant professionals. This thematic symposium takes place against the backdrop of rapid national economic development and prominent social and cultural demands, deeply reflecting the innovative thinking of contemporary Chinese librarianship in pursuing its mission goals in the new century.
