"Color and Black Ink Character Painting" refers to modern Chinese national painting character creation that uses more color language to construct the image of the painting compared to traditional ink painting. Color and black ink is easier to create atmosphere and greatly expands the expressive techniques of Chinese painting. Artist Xu Huiquan has devoted himself to the creation and research of color and black ink character painting for many years and has achieved outstanding results. His works preserve the charm of ink painting while focusing on the exploration of the quality, rules, and expressiveness of color. Although he uses a limited range of colors, he achieves an extreme expression of the beauty of each color. He often uses large areas of ink as the skeleton and intertwining ink lines as the veins, creating a textured effect on the painting through special treatments such as glue, alum, printing, and (a technique of transferring ink from paper to another surface). This gives his works a sense of temporal depth. In composition, he incorporates the structural principles of Western modern painting to break the concept of time and space, focusing on the mood and meaning of the scene. In terms of color handling, he adopts the elegance, gentleness, and richness of classical Western painting as the foundation, supplemented by the vibrant colors of impressionist painting, creating a nostalgic and sentimental atmosphere in the work. Looking at his paintings is like listening to an ancient mountain song, sipping a bitter coffee, or enjoying a fragrant cup of new tea, infusing a refreshing, gentle, quiet, and peaceful atmosphere into the fast-paced life of modern cities. Xu Huiquan was born in 1961 in Suzhou, Jiangsu. He is currently the Secretary-General of the Suzhou Artists Association and a specially appointed painter at the Jiangsu Painting Academy. He has won awards such as the First Prize in the "Eiffel Tower Art Cup" exhibition and the Bronze Award in the Fourth National Gongbi Painting Exhibition.
