Features: Segment: Fundamental training for milling work requires understanding the types of milling machines and their functions, mastering the correct operation methods of milling machines, and using tools and fixtures reasonably. Milling is one of the metal cutting processes, where metal is cut using a milling cutter on a milling machine. This chapter introduces basic knowledge of milling machines, milling cutters, and milling parameters.
Section: Basic Knowledge of Milling Machines
I. Classification of Milling Machines
There are many types of milling machines, with vertical and horizontal milling machines being the most commonly used.
1. Vertical Milling Machine (See Figure 1-1). The main feature of a vertical milling machine is that its spindle is perpendicular to the working table. Vertical milling machines have a wide range of processing capabilities. Typically, on a vertical milling machine, various types of cutters such as face mills, end mills, and form tools can be used to mill grooves, planes, and angular surfaces. Additionally, using machine accessories such as rotary tables and dividing heads, more complex workpieces such as arcs, linear formed surfaces, gears, helical grooves, and clutches can also be processed.
