Features: Jerome K. Jerome (1859—1927) was born in Worsworth, Staffordshire. At the age of 14, he began working as a clerk on the railways. After that, he worked as a teacher, actor, and eventually a journalist. In 1888, he published two books, Three Men in a Boat and Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, which were huge successes. In 1892, he co-founded the illustrated monthly The Idler, and in 1893, he launched the weekly The Contemporary. He also wrote a famous play titled Three Men on a Raft, which is a serious work that tells the story of a Jesus-like figure's influence on a group of lowlifes. Three Men in a Boat is described as "a record of a real voyage," but the world Jerome depicts has an extraordinary poetic quality, as such a world no longer exists. World War I brought fear and despair to the world, and Three Men in a Boat shows us a pastoral world that existed in England before the war.
