In 1918, he went to the United States for studies. During this period, he was exposed to bourgeois democratic thought and humanitarianism. Xu Zhimo began writing poetry in 1921, imitating the British aesthetic movement poets and showing a tendency toward art for art's sake. He traveled across Europe with the Indian poet Tagore. After returning to China, he wrote many excellent poems and prose. In terms of art, he demonstrated bright and delicate features.
