Features: This book is based on a special broadcast program titled "Ghosts in the Atom" by BBC Radio 3. The entire book consists of dialogues between the interviewer and eight leading physicists with a special interest in the fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics. It provides a clear and concise introduction to quantum theory, its difficulties and paradoxes, as well as various attempts to understand its philosophical implications. Although the book deals with a topic at the forefront of scientific research, it is written in an accessible manner, targeting physicists, philosophers, and general readers. The quantum revolution is unparalleled in its ability to radically transform our understanding of reality. Born in the first quarter of the 20th century, quantum physics dominates modern physics. However, the foundation upon which this highly successful theory is built seems counterintuitive. There has been intense controversy over the interpretation of quantum theory and attempts to resolve its various paradoxes. The results of a pivotal experiment in 1982 further reignited interest in the fundamental debate. This experiment seemed to irrevocably contradict the belief of a figure like Einstein, who argued that God does not play dice with the universe. This led to the BBC Broadcasting Department's Third Programme producing a documentary-style broadcast, which included interviews with many distinguished quantum physicists. This book is based on the original records of those interviews. It also provides a clear and concise introduction to quantum theory, its difficulties and paradoxes, as well as various attempts to understand its philosophical implications. Although the book deals with a topic at the forefront of scientific research, it is written in an accessible manner, targeting physicists, philosophers, and general readers.
