Features: "Combinatorial Extremal Arguments and Constructions": I am very pleased to see the official publication of this series of "Mathematical Olympiad Small Series." This series is large in scale and covers specialized topics. To my knowledge, such a series is not commonly seen. It not only elaborates on the common methods used in mathematical competitions but also provides refined analyses and solutions to competition problems, many of which stem from the author's own research. It is an excellent specialized tutorial for mathematical competitions and a reference book for middle and primary school students and teachers. The authors of this small series are all experts in mathematical competition teaching and research, many of whom are coaches for the national training team and leaders of the national team. They have made significant contributions to the development of mathematical competitions in China and to the achievements of Chinese students in the IMO, bringing honor to the country. They have also put in tremendous effort to ensure the timely publication of this book.
— Wang Yuan, a renowned mathematician and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former President of the Chinese Mathematical Society and Chairman of the China Mathematical Olympiad Committee
This book is a specialized work introducing methods for finding extrema of discrete quantities. There are two options for reading order: one is to start with familiar methods, which makes it easier to transition to other methods, and the other is to start with unfamiliar methods, which may lead to quicker results. In terms of reading style, focus on grasping the macro-thought process of each method rather than getting bogged down in specific details. For the basic steps of the methods, understand their essential functions rather than rigid procedures. For the examples in the book, try to solve them yourself after understanding the methods, and strive to come up with your own ideas. Additionally, frequently connect with previously solved exercises to achieve a solid mastery of the methods.
